I(Submitted
by Mrs Norah Kendall)
This is an account of the Laying up of the Standard
of the Bradford Branch. I have been the Standard Bearer for 22 years – a
post I have been happy and proud to hold. It was part of the morning
service taken by Reverend R S Crowe at St Chad’s Church, Toller Lane,
Bradford: a beautiful church with a great sense of history. I was supported
by ten Branch members who have always been there over the years and I do
thank them for their loyalty. Also present was Col (Retd) FM Cook, our past
Area Chairman, from York who gave an address on the history of the ATS and
the important work they did during the World War 2, and continue to do
today. When the time came for my part in the service, I was more nervous
than I had ever been before. Luckily I was accompanied by my daughter and
her husband and she walked at my side towards the Minister. I was so
pleased and proud of her support. Afterwards there were refreshments in the
rear of the church and Canon Crowe showed where the bracket would be placed
and the Standard would hang. We will visit when this happens.
Now I feel bereft, the Standard has played such a
huge part of my life for so long and as the Branch has closed, life seems a
little empty. In closing this account I must also report, sadly, on the
death of Mrs Ada Hudson ATS. Ada was our Secretary for many years and was
very hard working, always cheerful and ready to listen. We were delighted
that she received a Certificate of Appreciation very recently to reflect all
the effort she put into the Branch.
Editor: Sadly, Bradford Branch has had to close
but it is wonderful that their Standard has been laid up in such an
appropriate manner. I am sure that all the past branch members would wish to
thank Norah for her dedicated contribution as their Standard Bearer over all
those years. |
