Unfortunately because of age
and illness, only six members of Grimsby Branch could attend the Northern
Area Reunion in York. They all
thoroughly enjoyed themselves
and are looking forward to the next one.
After an uneventful summer we
organised a fish and chip lunch in October and ten members enjoyed that.
November was a very
busy month with the AGM at which we saw a change of Chairman. Audrey Porter,
who has held the post since 1994, retired due to ill health and Carole Tyler
was elected. Monica Barnes was elected to Carol's previous post as Vice
Chairman. Audrey was
delighted to accept the appointment of Vice-President and was presented with
a certificate, a bouquet of flowers in WRAC colours and a small
silver box in appreciation of
her years of work for the branch.
We continued in November with
the collection for the Poppy Appeal this year in B&Q due to health and
safety issues in our usual collecting place, ASDA.
The Standard attended the
Grimsby Cenotaph on Remembrance Day 8 November and was requested to be at
the Town Hall on Armistice Day 11 November. The Standard was on parade again
on Saturday 21 November as the coffins of two of Grimsby's soldiers from the
Grenadier Guards were returned to their home town. Many standards, the Mayor
and civic officers, the Town Crier and thousands of people lined
the route through Grimsby
Town centre to welcome the heroes back home. Some days later the standard
was in attendance at the two funerals
and paid last respects to the
"lads," Matthew and Jimmy.
Always thinking of their
tummies, fifteen members went for their Christmas lunch early in December
and celebrated in true style with a three course
lunch and all the trimmings,
starting off the festive season with a "bang", (probably a burst balloon or
someone falling off a chair).
Four Grimsby ladies have been
invited to a Christmas lunch by the Lincoln Branch and they are looking
forward to meeting old friends in
Lincoln. In the New Year we
are having a branch party and have invited Lincoln Branch to join us.
We are to start a recruiting
drive in the New Year to find new members to strengthen our happy band and
ensure the future of the organisation.
A happy and prosperous New
Year to all.
