By the time you read this report
we will have completed our first twelve months at
Devonshire Place and what a
difference a year makes! We regularly have on average twenty five ladies at our
monthly meetings and recently have recruited four more ladies
into the branch.
In June Carol Morris and I (Sue
Slattery) demonstrated pace stick drill at our meeting. This raised a few laughs
and a couple of members were brave enough to give it a try. Our ladies in green
were once again on parade along with the Branch Standard, this time in
Normandy. Branch members also
attended the Armed Forces Day both in Leicester and
Nottingham.
July - Our trial bingo session -
what a laugh we all had at this meeting. No-one could
take it seriously. Perhaps ear
defenders are the order of the day for next time because of the
noise, but then the caller would
have even less chance of being heard. Perhaps we should all learn how to lip
read! Also, this month,
ten of us joined the ladies at their branch in Tamworth for a skittle
match and buffet: needless to say
we lost. We had a lovely afternoon thanks to Belle
and the Tamworth/ Birmingham
ladies.
On a sad note this month we lost
one of our members, Brenda Hawkins. Several of our
members attended her funeral
along and the Branch Standard was paraded.
August - A cake and catch up
meeting. Our members certainly enjoyed the cake and the
time to discuss past events and
the forthcoming highlight of the year. l am referring of
course to our annual visit to the
sailing club courtesy of Doris Doswell, Irene Bell and
Sandra Smith. This was my first
year in attendance and despite being involved with the
preparation and then the clean up
it was a great day. The food was excellent; the piled high
plates said it all. The weather
was warm and sunny and the boat trips were greatly enjoyed by all who
cared to participate. Many thanks
to all who worked hard to make this such a perfect
day.

All at the Sailing Club
September - This month’s Harvest
Festival raised £70 for our funds.
A well-attended outing on the
Nottingham Princess on the River Trent proved a great success. We had a three
hour cruise with windy but sunny weather and a very enjoyable meal washed
down with a glass of wine or beer
and plenty of tea and coffee. Two members were able
to provide and drive two
minibuses for this outing. Thanks to Carol for organising such a great day out.
October – AGM and there were no
changes to branch officers this time.
Two of our ladies have been
poorly recently, Irene Bell, our Vice Chairman, who now appears to be on the
road to recovery and Pam Richards, our Welfare Officer, who was
recently in hospital for an
operation. Pam is now home so we wish her a speedy recovery and return to good
health.
Lyn Wenham our Standard Bearer
has paraded the Branch Standard seventeen times over the past year, both in
Europe and the UK. Many
thanks to Lyn and all the ladies who have provided escort to the standard and
supported her at different parades throughout the year.
November - the sherry/wine and
mince pie meeting was a great success and it
included our Christmas Fayre
which raised £50.
Our ladies in green – The Leicester seven plus one - and several other members,
attended the Remembrance
Day parade in London, seems they all had a great weekend. Also this month
several members attended a social evening at the RBL Club in Oadby with the
Korean Veterans’ Association which was most enjoyable.
December 2009 will end with our
Christmas Lunch at Devonshire Place on 8 December. January 2010 begins with a
visit to the De Montfort Hall to see a production
of Scrooge on the 7th.
Finally, best wishes and good health to you all for 2010. |
