We had a good Christmas lunch in December 2007
and were entertained by an excellent group of harmony singers followed in
January with a theatre visit to enjoy the musical ‘White Horse Inn’.
In February we had an interesting talk by a
member of the TS Vindacatrix Association (A Merchant Navy Training Ship). The
date, 3 September, is dedicated to the Merchant Navy and this association holds
a parade and church service on the nearest Sunday to this day. Some of our
members attended this event last year and hope to do so again on 7 September
this year.
In March we had another successful Bring and
Buy for our funds and our usual Nibble and Natter in April.
On a wet cold day in May, we paid a return
visit to Ulverscroft Grange and Manor and, in spite of the weather, a few brave
souls ventured out in the grounds. We had a very nice lunch served by the
volunteers, then retired to the lounge where there was a lovely fire to cheer us
and a gentleman entertained us playing the piano. (The helpers are a lovely
caring group of people - nothing is too much trouble for them).
In contrast our day out in June was a very warm
sunny day and twenty seven of our members boarded two mini-buses for a day out
at Rutland Water. This is a very popular sailing and sports area. A very large
man-made reservoir beautifully landscaped over the years and an ideal place to
spend the day. On arrival, we made our way to the restaurant for refreshments
etc which we had outside. There was over an hour to relax before we boarded the
Rutland Belle for a trip around the reservoir which took about an hour. After
disembarking we made our way back to the mini-buses and were taken to the nearby
village of Whitwell, where we had a very good lunch at the village pub. This
was a lovely day out organised by two of our members, Carol Morris and Sue
Slattery.
This brings us up to date with our programme.
Over the remainder of the year we have a talk from a Land Army Veteran, our
Sailing Club Day in August, one of our nicest meetings and some fund raising
events. We continue to support other associations with some of our members
attending parades etc. Lyn Wenham, our new Standard Bearer, has represented us
at various events and has slotted in perfectly. She is very smart and competent
and a good successor to Vi Rawlins who served us so well for many years.
Five of our members again enjoyed a day on the
river at Nottingham courtesy of the “Not Forgotten” Association.
We still have some of our ladies under the
weather and we hope they will soon be well again. Two members have now moved
from our area to be near family – Kath Barron and Barbara Cameron. We wish them
well and will miss them at our meetings.
Our best wishes to all our members and friends
– thank you for your support over the year and may you enjoy a good summer.
Will members please note our Annual General
Meeting of the Branch will take place on 14 October 2008 at 1400 hours at The
Secular Hall, Humberstone Gate, Leicester.
If you are unable to attend this meeting and
have any nominations for posts or items for the Agenda, will you please inform
the Secretary by the end of September. Lilian Hollis 0116 2876086 |
