We enjoyed our Christmas lunch at our
regular venue, the Masonic Rooms. During the first three months of the year
attendance at our meetings is always low, mainly due to bad weather and
travel problems. Very few of us still have our own transport and some
members have to get two buses each way to get to our meetings.
In May we had two very enjoyable day trips –
the first was to Wilmslow Branch for an ATS 70th Anniversary birthday party.
It was so nice to be there when Lilian Edwards was presented with her
Certificate of Appreciation – an afternoon of fun topped with a super
buffet.
The second occasion was a trip to the
National Memorial Arboretum - what a big change we saw from our previous
visit nine years ago. Everything has filled out and matured and the
beautiful Armed Services Memorial has been built. Some of us had to have
our photograph taken with the “ATS Girl” and I hope our readers are not sick
of seeing them! The guide on the miniature train told us the sculptor’s wife
was his model.
On Sunday 17 August there is to be a Service
in Manchester Cathedral to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of
the Royal British Legion, the 70th of the ATS and WRVS and the 60th
of the WRAC, so it should be a great event. We shall be there with our
Standard. In September – the first Sunday – we shall pay our annual visit to
Eden Camp in Yorkshire for the Remembrance Service and parade of Standards.
Sadly, we have lost two of our members since
my last report, Mrs Mary Campbell (our first Chairlady) who died in March
and Mrs Winifred Booth who died at the end of May.
We send our good wishes to all other
Branches, you would be very welcome at the Town Hall, last Tuesday in each
month. Come for lunch at 1200 hrs and our meeting is from 1330-1500 hrs. |
