Greetings to you all from our Branch and all
friends round the Wrekin.
Thinking back to Veterans Day in June last
year, we had a nice sunny day at the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas
– everyone had a good day there, especially Chas and his harem! At the same
time Lucy and Beryl were living it up in London seeing the sights and
feeding their tums, courtesy of The “Not Forgotten” Association.
Members who went on the day trip with REME
Association to Llangollen Steam Railway didn’t have a steaming hot day there
after all – it rained and was very cold. It would have been nice to have a
roaring fire in the waiting room just like old times but no such luck.
At our August meeting, Beryl brought in a
surprise birthday cake for Nancy with a huge 80 on the top: a tasty treat
for us all and it was soon devoured. Quite a few of us have the OBE status
now – “Over Blinking Eighty”!
Nancy was able to represent Shropshire Branch at the dedication of the Lincoln
and District Branch Standard at St Mary Le Wigford Church in Lincoln. It
was a memorable and very moving service – what a wonderful achievement for
the members of the Branch in such a short time. Nancy was particularly
impressed being a Lincolnshire Lass herself, in other words a Lincolnshire
Yellow Belly!
The same Committee were reinstated at our
AGM. Our Area Reunion at the Lord Hill, Shrewsbury was a great success.
Thanks to everyone for their hard work.
In October we had another racy evening out,
being invited to the REME Association Social. We were looked after very
well, the food and wine flowed freely and the ‘Race Horses’ seem to gallop
faster each year. Afterwards our gallant knights in shining armour took us
all safely home (in their cars).
November was a busy month. Lucy, Beryl,
Nancy and Sandra were selling poppies in the supermarkets for the Royal
British Legion. This year’s Remembrance Day Services attracted more people
than ever. The Garrison Church was full. Sandra Davies, our new Standard
Bearer, carried our Standard and Lucy laid the wreath. Sandra also carried
our Standard at the Festival of Light at Oakengates Theatre. Our November
meeting was held at Beryl’s flat as, unfortunately, our usual venue suffered
a severe fire – is Guy Fawkes still around?
On 4 December we went out for our Christmas
Dinner at the White House Hotel, Muxton. We made it a very special day by
officially handing over our Standard from Lucy Bowyer to Sandra Davies.
Lucy has carried our Standard 173 times in the last 19 years, both here and
abroad. She has done us proud – our sincere thanks to you, Lucy. We
thought we may have had to lay our Standard up. However, Sandra has accepted
the challenge and we look forward to her representing us in the years to
come. Thank you, Sandra.
A Happy and Healthy 2008 to everyone and a
special toast to the Lioness.
