The members of Wilmslow Branch send good
wishes to you all. For our May meeting we decided to have a party to
celebrate the 70th anniversary of the forming of the ATS – our
Secretary has some brilliant ideas, so invitations were sent out to Branches
in the North West Area and we were pleased to receive many acceptances.
We hold our meetings in the Wilmslow RBL and
they very kindly allowed us to use the large hall and the kitchen, so we had
plenty of room to move about. We decided not to have a raffle but just to
have a tombola instead which was quite successful with lots of very nice
prizes. Gwen Johnson, one of our members, brought a lovely doll dressed in
Victorian clothes and the game was to guess her name. None of us guessed
correctly – Gwen had called her Beatrice. Princess Beatrice is often in the
news but nobody thought of it, so all the names of the entrants were put in
a box and the one pulled out was the lucky winner who took the doll home.
For refreshments we hired caterers who
prepared a very nice buffet which seemed to be enjoyed by all. Afterwards
we had a written quiz about characters from fairytales and that certainly
got the old brain box working I can tell you. The prize was £10 so it was
worth having a good try, but nobody got all the answers correct so the names
of those with the highest score were put in the box (again) and the one
pulled out won the prize. We thought it had been a successful afternoon but
what we didn’t know was that Marie Hemmings, Chairman North West Area was
there to present our Secretary, Lilian Edwards, with a Certificate of
Appreciation. Many congratulations, Lilian – you deserve it. It was lovely
to see so many familiar faces, but age seems to be taking its toll as was
evident by the number of ladies with walking sticks.
At our June meeting we were pleased to
welcome Betty Masterman, our member who now lives in Spain. We had some good
laughs talking about old times. We were also pleased to welcome Jean Latham
from Stockport Branch, she couldn’t come to our party so came to our meeting
instead. We are always pleased to see you, Jean.
July is our Birthday month so we will be
lunching at our usual hotel where we are very well known and always made
welcome. Our numbers are dwindling but we ‘carry on regardless’ and enjoy
all our meetings and outings.
We were very sad to hear of the death of
Lucy Woodcock, one of our founder members and a regular attender at our
meetings. The funeral was in Christmas week which was such a sad time for
all her family. Most of our Branch went to the Service and it was very sad
to say goodbye to her. We miss her at our meetings. It was Lucy’s husband
who gave the £10 for the Quiz prize – we thought that was a very nice thing
to do.
We send our good wishes to you all and to
Betty in Spain and Joan in Australia. |
