A
Happy New Year to all our comrades far and wide. It only seems like yesterday
that we were welcoming 2007. Time certainly does fly when you are having fun.
Unfortunately, due to bad weather and illness, our yearly visit to Scarborough
had to be cancelled. We are hoping to meet up with the girls early in the New
Year. We are looking forward to catching up on all their news.
In
September, we once again attended the Thanksgiving and Remembrance Service at
Eden Camp in Malton. There were 108 standards on parade and nearly 1,500
ex-service personnel marching. Feona Dixon and myself, Pam Nesbitt, found
ourselves leading the parade as the photo shows.
Five of our members attended the North East Area Reunion in Middlesbrough. A big
vote of thanks goes to our new Area Chairman, Maj (Retd) Dot Ryder, for the
excellent organisation. In November, we had our AGM. Luckily all serving
committee members agreed to serve again for a further year. Mary Robinson, our
very valued member, has not been well and is still awaiting a hip replacement. I
am pleased to report that Col (Retd) Hazel Powell is back on her feet after her
hip replacement.
Eighteen of us managed to attend the Festival of Remembrance in the York
Barbican Centre. We always manage to get front row seats that enable a good view
of the proceedings. The Heavy Cavalry and Cambrai Band entertained us with dance
band favourites and xylophone duets. They also accompanied the audience in
community singing. The Tynesider Choir, who were the Backworth Male Voice Choir
founded in 1951 by miners, sang a medley of tunes arranged by their Musical
Director – what beautiful voices to come from the pits. Children of 246 Gurkha
Signal Squadron performed traditional Nepalese dances and the York Ladies sang a
medley of old favourites. We had an excellent evening.
In
December, we had our annual Christmas Tea Party and also celebrated the 25th
Anniversary of the re-formation of the WRAC Association in York. Pam, Chairman,
produces Bucks Fizz for everyone and a large cake for both Christmas and our
anniversary. A good time was had by all. We are saving our Christmas lunch until
February after we have recovered from our family celebrations.
Five members were invited by the “Not Forgotten” Association to their Christmas
Lunch at the Ramada Jarvis Hotel in Wetherby. Their Events Office, Rosie
Thompson, had recently completed the New York Marathon to raise fund for the
Association and was proudly showing off her medal. I’m sure that many of you
will recognise Rosie.
Editor: The WRAC Association receives several kind and generous
invitations each year from the “Not Forgotten” Association and we are very
grateful for their kind generosity. I am sure that many of you will have been
kind enough to sponsor Rosie in her Marathon efforts and we congratulate her on
her success.
